Byrne Wines

Handcrafted wines with texture

the byrne wines story

Alex Byrne worked at Taltarni vineyard for Dominique Portet while studying Agriculture/Horticulture as a 17 year old.  After stints in a variety of hospitality and retail wine sales positions, Alex ended up again working for Dominique as a vintage cellar hand in his new Yarra Valley winery in 2002, and hasn't looked back since.

Alex studied Wine Science at Deakin and Charles Sturt Universities, continuing to work in retail wine sales as well as working vintages in Margaret River and the Northern Rhone Valley while studying.

After universtiy Alex worked in Burgundy before returning to Australia to work at Lethbridge winery and begin making his own Byrne wines from Ballarat.

In 2013 he and his friend Kim Farrell formed Liquid Rock n Roll wines in order to experiment with different styles of wine.

Since 2014 he has also been making wines with his mates Cam Nicol and for Noisy Ritual, a people-powered urban winery in Melbourne.

In 2016 Alex finished working at Lethbridge winery to focus on his own projects.  Moving the Byrne and Liquid Rock n Roll operations to Galli Estate winery in Sunbury allowed him to have a shorter commute to Melbourne and spend more time at the Noisy Ritual winery in Brunswick.

Byrne Wines was then also able to expand to make small batches of premium wines from other cool climate regions surrounding Melbourne.
