The cool growing conditions allowed the fruit to develop concentrated flavour while retaining bright natural acid. The nose displays floral and citrus characteristics which mingle with white stone fruit and a hint of pie crust on the palate. The acid provides amazing freshness and length on the palate.

If I was to say what “typical” Geelong pinot is, it might look something like this.

A classic Geelong Pinot Noir with lifted floral aromas leading to red and dark berries overlaid with spice. These characters follow through on the palate, underpinned by supple tannins and bright acidity that keeps the wine bright and vibrant.

This wine balances dark cherry, subtle earth and spice aromas coupled with sour cherry and bramble characteristics on the palate and plentiful fine tannin gives great length and complexity without being overwhelming.

Sourced from a vineyard at the southern end of the Sunbury GI, this Pinot Noir displays red and dark berry fruits with a hint of spice and earthy characters. The generous flavours provide weight on the mid palate carried by silky tannins that provide a lingering finish.

Made from an exceptional batch of fruit that clearly wanted to be elevated to a higher status, matured in 60% new oak for 18 months to acknowledge and enhance its power and concentration. A special wine that will reward cellaring and has become known as the Golden Child Pinot Noir.

Off the French block at Strathmore — mature, close-planted, classic Burgundian clones on the limestone-speckled soil of the Moorabool Valley. A cool year, low-yielding vines and gentle handling. Floral and red berry to open, then spice and earth balancing the fruit, and fine tannin against firm acid for the length.
Trawalla

One of only two Shiraz vineyards we know of in the Ballarat area, and it makes a genuinely cool-climate Shiraz. Dark berries and spice, quiet at first, savoury and complex underneath. Give it time and a big glass — it opens right up, and the natural acid and firm tannin carry it.

Alex Byrne
The idea came from Burgundy. The fruit comes from Geelong and Ballarat.
In 2008 I was offered a vintage at Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy. That is where the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay really started for me, and a good deal of the cheese with them.
I came home at the start of 2009 to the assistant winemaker job at Lethbridge, in Geelong, and started making cool-climate Victorian wine of my own alongside it. Ballarat, where I grew up without ever appreciating the cold, turned out to be the right place in Australia to grow Pinot and Chardonnay: a long, slow season on rocky volcanic soil, and fruit elegant enough to make something subtle out of.
